How it compares

  • Beginner-friendly
  • After work
  • Take it home the same day

At $38, this sits toward the low end of the 14 single-session painting classes we list in New York. They run from $30 to $470, and the typical price is $245.

That works out to about $19 an hour for a 2-hour session.

If one session leaves you wanting more, 6 studios we list run multi-week painting courses, from $25.

It starts after work, which only 34% of the painting classes on our calendar do.

New to painting?

Painting and drawing classes run from relaxed one-night sessions that guide you to a finished canvas to multi-week courses in watercolour, oils, figure drawing or illustration.

  • Guided one-night classes suit groups and first-timers; courses suit people who want to improve.
  • Figure-drawing sessions use a live model and are usually for adults only.
  • Materials are usually included in one-off classes; courses often send a supply list.

Taking it home: The same day, though acrylic and oil may need a few hours to dry before they travel well.
