The short answer

The cheapest craft classes in New York are free library circles for knitting, crochet and embroidery at Brooklyn Public Library branches, museum drop-in drawing that costs nothing beyond admission (and admission to the Met is pay-what-you-wish for New York State residents), and life-drawing drop-ins at $10 to $22.

For a taught class with materials, Prospect Heights Brainery runs one-night painting, embroidery and soap classes at $30 to $40, and the Bronx River Art Center charges $35 to $45 a class for printmaking, handbuilding, wheel pottery and stained glass. Center for Book Arts sells online classes on a sliding scale from $10.

Where cheap craft in New York comes from

Library craft circles — free

Brooklyn Public Library branches run weekly and monthly knitting, crochet and craft circles with no fee listed and, at New Lots, practice yarn supplied. The event pages we read do not ask for a library card. They are social rather than taught, and beginners are welcome.

Museum drop-ins — the price of admission

The Met runs Drop-in Drawing and Open Studio free with admission, and admission is pay-what-you-wish for New York State residents ($0.01 minimum). Cooper Hewitt runs drop-in sketching; Poster House runs $5 First Friday workshops; Queens Museum runs a free open studio for teens and adults with disabilities.

Drop-in life drawing — $10 to $22

Uninstructed but cheap and constant: Society of Illustrators sketch nights ($10 students and seniors, $20 general), Art Students League open sketch ($15 weekday evenings), and Spring Studio on the Lower East Side ($20 cash, seven days a week).

Community art centres — $35 to $45 a class

The Bronx River Art Center at West Farms prints per-class prices for adult printmaking, handbuilding, wheel pottery and stained glass, materials included. The catch: the whole autumn term is paid up front at registration.

One-night community classrooms — $30 to $40

Prospect Heights Brainery runs one-evening classes in watercolour, gouache, charcoal, embroidery, needle felting and soap, usually with materials. Brooklyn Craft Company in Greenpoint runs $45–$50 beginner knitting, crochet and embroidery, though materials are often extra.

Sliding scales — from $10

Center for Book Arts sells its online classes on five tiers, from $10 marked for significant financial hardship up to $80, and asks for no proof. Every Center for Book Arts class under $50 we found is online over Zoom; its in-person Midtown classes start at $130.

Check whether materials are included

Prospect Heights Brainery and the Bronx River Art Center usually include materials. Brooklyn Craft Company charges $45 for three hours of instruction and sells yarn and supplies separately, with a 10% student discount in its shop.

Cheap classes sell out

Several of the $45–$50 Brooklyn Craft Company classes and the $5 Poster House workshop were sold out when we checked. Join the notification list rather than waiting for the page to change.

Pay-what-you-wish has rules

At the Met it applies to New York State residents and NY, NJ and CT students. Online purchase needs a New York State billing address; otherwise buy at the desk.

Open studio is not a class

Brooklyn Craft Company open sewing hours are $10 an hour with a two-hour minimum, and you need to have taken Sewing 101 or know a machine. Life drawing drop-ins have a model and no teacher.

How this page was made, and who made it

Every price was read off the provider's own booking or events page in September 2026. The ceiling is $50 for one person for one session. Where a museum class is free with admission, the price shown is what admission costs you at the lowest tier you can use. New York Public Library and Queens Public Library event pages would not load or showed old dates when we checked, so none of their programmes is listed yet.

This site is published by KraftStories, a craft studio in the Financial District whose classes cost more than $50 and so are not on this page.

Our editorial standards spell out the rest.
