Wick and Pour's September prices were $50 on weekdays and $60 at weekends, marked 'now through September'; on 1 October its site showed 'From $50'. Classpop's $39.99 is a discount from $69.
Wick and Pour, Element and APOTHEKE: pick a vessel, blend a scent from a wall of oils, pour, and wait for it to set. Twenty-five to sixty minutes of actual pouring. Good for a date or a birthday; walk-ins are sometimes taken.
Unique Workshop, Back Porch, Nose Best and Vela explain wax types, how much fragrance oil the wax will hold, wick sizing and pouring temperatures. The class you want if you plan to make candles at home afterwards.
KraftStories runs a one-hour guided soy candle class: an instructor walks the group through blending and pouring, without the chemistry lecture.
Classpop in East Williamsburg and Planet Sis in Astoria run candle nights in bars and partner venues. The cheapest seats in the city, with a drink in hand and less instruction.
Only Element (8 oz), Back Porch (8 oz tin), Vela's Pressed Florals workshop (8 oz) and Nose Best state a size. Vela holds uncollected candles for two to three weeks; APOTHEKE will ship yours for $20.
The youngest age anyone prints is 7 (Wick and Pour). Back Porch is 21 and over because of the complimentary wine; Vela's BYOB is beer, wine and seltzer only, for over-21s.
Most studios here that name their wax use soy; Back Porch uses coconut wax. You choose a vessel, then build a scent from the studio's fragrance oils — APOTHEKE offers more than 50, Nose Best ten that combine up to 175 ways. The instructor sets a wick in the vessel, you stir your blend into melted wax and pour. A signature scent usually layers three notes — a bright top note such as citrus or bergamot, a middle of florals or spice, and a base such as sandalwood or vanilla that lasts longest. Wick and Pour also lets you pick colours and decorations.
Then you wait. Studios hold the candle for 15 minutes to an hour until it is firm enough to carry. It is not finished: soy wax keeps curing, and KraftStories advises waiting 24–48 hours before the first burn. On that first burn, let the melt pool reach the edge of the vessel before blowing it out, or the candle will tunnel for the rest of its life.
Every price, time and age rule above was read off the studio's own site in September 2026. Hosts that appear only on marketplace listings, with no readable site of their own, were left out; studios that other lists recommend but that have closed or paused are listed separately above.
This site is published by KraftStories, which runs candle-making classes in its Financial District and Midtown studios. Both are in this guide, labelled, and sorted by price like everyone else.
