How to do it: The pizza map
New York pizza is several different things: the thin, foldable plain slice; coal-oven pies from the 1920s; Neapolitan pies from wood ovens; square Sicilian and grandma slices; and Staten Island’s cracker-thin bar pies.
This list has all of them, in three boroughs. It’s a weekend, not a day: pick a neighbourhood and eat two at most.
- The order to do it in
- Manhattan first (Joe’s, John’s, Prince Street, Rubirosa, Scarr’s), Brooklyn on another day (Juliana’s with the bridge walk, Lucali, Best, Me and Paul’s, Roberta’s), and Staten Island with the ferry.
- When to go
- Slice shops any time; sit-down pizzerias at opening or booked ahead.
- Getting there
- Subway in Manhattan and Brooklyn; the free Staten Island Ferry then a bus for Staten Island.
- What it costs
- Slices about $4–8; whole pies about $20–35.
Worth knowing
- Lucali has no reservations: get there around 3:30 p.m. to put your name down.
- Paulie Gee’s reopened in 2026 as Me and Paul’s, same address, same pizza.
