New Year’s Eve in NYC 2026: Times Square and the free fireworks
The ball drops at midnight on Thursday, December 31, 2026, after a 60-second descent from atop One Times Square. It’s free, no ticket, first come first served: viewing pens officially open at 3pm, you enter from Sixth or Eighth Avenue, and once you leave your spot you can’t get back in — and there are no bathrooms. For fireworks instead, Central Park (with the NYRR Midnight Run) and Prospect Park both light up at midnight.

Times Square: the ways in, and the best views
Use Sixth Ave if you’re coming from east of Broadway and Eighth Ave if you’re coming from the west. The Times Square Alliance says the best views are on Broadway from 43rd to 50th St and up Seventh Ave to 59th St.
Access points and viewing streets from the Times Square Alliance FAQ (2025 event; it hasn’t changed in years).
