About
Special Topics: Lanterns is a six-week ceramics class at Gasworks NYC, the community clay studio on Fifth Avenue in South Slope, Brooklyn. Taught by Brooklyn ceramic artist Michele Xiaoyun Fan, it has students make sculptural lanterns by hand-building and wheel-throwing. The course covers carving, appliqués such as slips, sculpted ceramic flowers, slabs and coils, special textures, and glaze techniques including dipping, pouring and spraying. If time allows, students may join a luster firing. It meets on Saturdays from 1:15pm to 3:45pm, from 19 September to 24 October 2026, so the final sessions are close. The page calls it an intermediate and advanced class for hand-builders and wheel throwers, who should be comfortable with larger amounts of clay or larger forms. The price covers studio access (open 6am to 10pm), clay, over 50 custom glazes and equipment, while firing is charged at 3.5 cents per cubic inch. The page does not state a minimum age. Refunds are tied to the first day of the term. The price is $525, with no other tiers printed. Gasworks is at 673 Fifth Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215. The R, F and G lines serve the area. For a one-off alternative, KraftStories NYC lists a Lantern Making Class at $99.
