Neon 101 (december)
About
Neon 101 (December) is a two-session weekend workshop at UrbanGlass in Downtown Brooklyn on December 12 and 13, with the listed hours 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Instructor Caroline LaCava teaches the basics of neon tube bending and building a sculptural neon light: you can expect to leave with one or two units, such as a free-standing or ceiling-hung neon lamp. Clean-up is included in class time. No previous experience is required and the minimum age is 14. The work is mostly standing and takes dexterity. If tube processing takes longer than the class, you return to collect your work once the studio notifies you. Health and safety guidelines are emailed at registration. UrbanGlass does not print a price on the class page, so check the booking page for the current fee. UrbanGlass is at 647 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11217, in Downtown Brooklyn within a few blocks of Nevins St (2, 3, 4, 5), DeKalb Ave (B, Q, R) and Hoyt–Schermerhorn (A, C, G). The studio notes that classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date, so register early. Neon is a recurring strength of UrbanGlass's schedule. This is the intensive weekend option, and Wearable Neon, a six-week Saturday-evening course that begins on October 31, covers neon as wearable art. Open Studios on December 6 also offers a short Bend Your Own neon lesson if you want to try the technique first.
