Open Studios: Winter in the City
About
Open Studios: Winter in the City is a four-hour public open house at UrbanGlass in Downtown Brooklyn on Sunday, December 6, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. It fills the studio's 17,000-square-foot space with art making and demonstrations, and you can sign up for a single activity or try several. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Free activities include drop-in screen printing (with $10 tote bags on sale), seasonal garland making, bead stringing, glass demonstrations and the Bead Project Market. Paid 30-minute lessons are priced per activity: Glassblowing: Ornaments is $85 (one-on-one, ages 12 and up), Beadmaking: Winter Charms is $45 (one-on-one, ages 12 and up), Festive Fusing: Seasonal Decor is $35 (group lesson, all ages with a chaperone), and Neon: Bend Your Own is $45 (ages 14 and up, one ticket covers up to two people). Turning a neon piece into a glowing sign, called bombarding, is an extra $110 and takes up to two weeks. Glassblowing, bead and fusing pieces cool overnight, so you return the following week to collect them. UrbanGlass is at 647 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11217, in Downtown Brooklyn within a few blocks of Nevins St (2, 3, 4, 5), DeKalb Ave (B, Q, R) and Hoyt–Schermerhorn (A, C, G). It is the most family-friendly UrbanGlass date we list, with free drop-in activities alongside the paid lessons.
