Paperweight Party (october)

About

Paperweight Party (October) is a three-hour glassmaking session at UrbanGlass in Downtown Brooklyn on Sunday, October 25, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Instructor Rachel Brumberg, who began glassblowing at UrbanGlass more than 20 years ago, covers safety, colour application and tools as you make a small, colourful solid paperweight. No previous experience is required and the minimum age is 14. The hot shop is loud and hot, glass is molten at about 2000 degrees, and the work involves sitting, standing and lifting roughly 5 to 10 pounds. Health and safety guidelines are emailed when you register. The paperweight has to cool overnight, so you return to collect it once notified. UrbanGlass does not print a price on the class page, so check the booking page for the current fee. UrbanGlass is at 647 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11217, in Downtown Brooklyn within a few blocks of Nevins St (2, 3, 4, 5), DeKalb Ave (B, Q, R) and Hoyt–Schermerhorn (A, C, G). The studio notes that classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date, so register early. It is one of the shortest ways to make a finished piece in the hot shop. The seasonal Pumpkin-palooza session runs on October 11, and Glassblowing 101 in November spends two days on learning to gather, blow and shape glass.
