Urban Farm Volunteers

About

Urban Farm Volunteers is a free drop-in session at the one-acre Urban Farm on Randall's Island, run by the Randall's Island Park Alliance. Volunteers help with weeding, composting and the daily chores of running the farm, working alongside the farmers. Sessions are on Sundays from 10am to 1pm, and the Alliance says to expect to stay at least two hours. Its volunteer page gives the season as April to mid-October, although its events page still lists a Sunday session on October 25, so check before making a late-season trip. No farming experience is needed and no advance registration is required. The page prints no fee. Volunteers must generally be 11 or older. Anyone aged 15 or under needs an adult present, and 16 and 17 year olds can volunteer unsupervised with a waiver signed by a parent or guardian. Everyone signs a waiver, adults at on-site check-in. The Alliance provides water, snacks, sunscreen, insect repellent, tools and gloves, and recommends closed-toe shoes, long pants and weather-appropriate clothing. Work goes ahead rain or shine unless conditions are unsafe, with Urban Farm cancellations posted on social media. Randall's Island Park is reached on foot over the 103rd St pedestrian bridge from Manhattan, or by the M35 bus from 125th St. Another Randall's Island listing, the Halloween Boo Bash, follows on October 24.
