Block Printing on Clothing: Upcycle Your Wardrobe
About
Design, carve and hand-print a 4x6-inch block, then use it to print a garment you already own, such as a denim jacket, linen trousers, a cotton shirt or a canvas tote. It runs Thursday 5 November, 6pm to 8:30pm, at the San Diego Craft Collective, 2590 Truxtun Rd, Studio 106, Liberty Station (MTS Route 28 runs along Rosecrans St by Liberty Station), for ages 14+; printing supplies are included, but bring your own cotton or linen piece. It is on sale at $10, down from $75. On 21 November the studio has a natural-dye and shibori class for more fabric work.

New to printmaking?
Printmaking classes cover ways of making an image you can print more than once: carving lino or wood blocks, screen printing, monotypes, etching or letterpress.
- Block printing and monotype are the friendliest starts; etching and letterpress need more studio time.
- Inks stain. Wear old clothes and expect to wash up at the end.
- You usually leave with an edition of several prints, not just one.
Taking it home: Usually the same day, once the ink is dry enough to carry. Oil-based prints may need a few days.
