Play Day
About
A free family morning centred on making monoprints of San Diego's native plants and animals with tempera paint, plus a kid-friendly tour of the collection, a 12:30pm storytime, a book nook, music and outdoor play on McGrath Terrace. It runs Sunday 8 November, 11am to 2pm, mainly in the Conrad Prebys Learning Center at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, 700 Prospect St, La Jolla (MTS Route 30). It is free for all ages with no RSVP, and museum admission is free all day as part of Free Second Sunday. The museum also has a hands-on printmaking workshop for adults on 14 November.

How it compares
- Kids & families
- Weekend
- Take it home the same day
It is free. Most printmaking classes in San Diego are not: the paid ones we list start at $10.
If one session leaves you wanting more, 1 studio we list runs multi-week printmaking courses, from $525.
It is on a weekend, which only 40% of the printmaking classes on our calendar are.

New to printmaking?
Printmaking classes cover ways of making an image you can print more than once: carving lino or wood blocks, screen printing, monotypes, etching or letterpress.
- Block printing and monotype are the friendliest starts; etching and letterpress need more studio time.
- Inks stain. Wear old clothes and expect to wash up at the end.
- You usually leave with an edition of several prints, not just one.
Taking it home: Usually the same day, once the ink is dry enough to carry. Oil-based prints may need a few days.
