Queer for Clay
About
Queer For Clay is a weekly ceramics class at Gasworks NYC, the community clay studio on Fifth Avenue in South Slope, Brooklyn. Taught by Samson Neary, it takes a tour through queer ceramic artists while teaching handbuilding and wheel fundamentals. Students are encouraged to bring project ideas and make work inspired by the techniques of notable queer ceramicists. It sits under the studio's adult weekly classes. The class meets on Thursdays from 1:30pm to 4pm. The fall term runs for twelve weeks, which the page dates as 14 September to 6 December 2026, so it is already under way; ask the studio about joining mid-term. The page lists studio access (open 6am to 10pm), white, brown, red and sculpture clay, over 50 custom glazes, and equipment including Shimpo wheels, a slab roller, an extruder and a gas kiln, with firing at 3.5 cents per cubic inch. The page does not state a level or minimum age. Pricing is on a sliding scale: $75 (Seeding), $375 (Sustaining) or $675 (Generating). Gasworks is at 673 Fifth Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215. The R, F and G lines serve the area. As a daytime option it differs from Gasworks' Saturday-evening Latine Class, which uses the same sliding scale.
