Glassblowing 101 (november)
About
Glassblowing 101 (November) is a two-day introduction to the hot shop at UrbanGlass in Downtown Brooklyn, running November 7 and 8 with sessions from 2:00 to 8:00 pm. Instructor Ron Johnson teaches beginners to gather, blow and shape molten glass, making colourful beginner forms such as solid sculptures, cups and experimental shapes. Safety, tools and clean-up are covered, and the last 20 minutes of class are spent cleaning your workstation. No experience is required and the minimum age is 14. The hot shop is loud and hot, glass is worked at about 2000 degrees, and you will sit, stand and lift roughly 5 to 10 pounds. Glass cools overnight, so you collect your work after the studio notifies you. UrbanGlass does not print a price on the class page, so check the booking page for the current fee. UrbanGlass is at 647 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11217, in Downtown Brooklyn within a few blocks of Nevins St (2, 3, 4, 5), DeKalb Ave (B, Q, R) and Hoyt–Schermerhorn (A, C, G). The studio notes that classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date, so register early. It is the fullest beginner glassblowing class on our calendar for UrbanGlass. Shorter options include the Make Your Own Blown Glass Ornament session on November 21 and the Pumpkin-palooza workshop on October 11, while One Day Punties & Gathers on November 22 is the follow-up for people who have already blown glass.
