Wearable Neon
About
Wearable Neon is a six-session course at UrbanGlass in Downtown Brooklyn, meeting on Saturdays from 6:00 to 9:00 pm from October 31 to December 12, with no class on November 28. Instructor Molmol Kuo teaches you to make two to three wearable, portable pieces of neon light art using an open-source toolkit developed with the MIT Media Lab's Future Sketches group. The course ends with a fashion show where students show their pieces. All levels are welcome and no experience is required: beginners focus on design and basic techniques, intermediate students on three-dimensional work, and advanced students can explore lettering. The minimum age is 14. The work means standing, bending and assembling neon tubes over a torch flame, and it requires dexterity. Students may need to return to collect work if processing takes longer. Materials are planned according to enrollment, and the class page prints no price, so check the booking page for the current fee. UrbanGlass is at 647 Fulton St, Brooklyn, NY 11217, in Downtown Brooklyn within a few blocks of Nevins St (2, 3, 4, 5), DeKalb Ave (B, Q, R) and Hoyt–Schermerhorn (A, C, G). The studio notes that classes with low enrollment may be cancelled within two weeks of the start date, so register early. Neon is a recurring strength of the studio's schedule: Neon 101 follows on December 12 and 13 for a free-standing or ceiling-hung lamp, while this one is the longer, wearable-art route.
