Friday Volunteer Day
About
Friday Volunteer Day is a community volunteering shift at the Earth Matter NY Compost Learning Center on Governors Island. Volunteers help maintain the community compost site, and the registration page says tasks change from week to week depending on what the site needs most. It is general site upkeep rather than a set programme, so expect practical outdoor work. Shifts run on Fridays from 9:00am to 12:15pm. The registration page lists dates from 16 October through to 25 December 2026, with open places shown for each date, from three on 16 October to seven on later Fridays. It does not state a minimum age or what to bring or wear, and it prints no fee for volunteering. Sign up on the registration page, then click confirm registration to complete it. Please cancel at least five days ahead so someone else can take your place. Groups cannot register on this calendar and should email the organisers instead. The site is at 758 Enright Rd, Governors Island, New York, NY 10004. Take the ferry from the Battery Maritime Building; the site is a walk or bike ride across the island. On Mondays, Earth Matter runs a separate session, Monday Madness: Compost Build, at the same site.
