Governors Island Bird Tour
About
Governors Island Bird Tour is a free, 90-minute birdwatching walk on Governors Island in New York Harbor. The page notes that nearly 240 bird species have been spotted on the island, and the session it lists runs from 2:15 to 3:45 pm. Our listing repeats it on Saturdays at 2:15 pm; the registration page shows the dated session, so check it for which Saturdays are running. It does not name a leader or give a minimum age. Meet at the Soissons Ferry Landing, next to the welcome centre, where Governors Island volunteers can point you the right way. Binoculars are available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is not required but is highly encouraged, and you are asked to tell the organisers if you cannot come. The island has hilly grassy areas and cobblestone paths that are awkward for strollers, and public restrooms are near the meeting point. The tour is free. The ferry ticket is bought separately. Take the ferry from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street, an eight-minute ride, and catch the 2:00 pm sailing at the latest. South Ferry (1), Whitehall St (R/W) and Bowling Green (4/5) are all close. For other birding on the calendar, see Wave Hill's mindful birding walk on October 18 or Gabriel Willow's morning birding at Prospect Park.
