🌱Kākoʻo ʻŌiwi
Heʻeia, Windward Side · kah-KOH-oh OH-ee-vee
405 acres of wetland and loʻi at the bottom of Heʻeia, land that was sugar cane and then cattle pasture before it was returned to kalo.
What you do. Planting, weeding and harvesting kalo in the flooded patches, clearing invasive mangrove, and whatever the season happens to need. On Thursdays the work moves indoors to the production kitchen, turning the harvest into poi and kūlolo.
Who it suits. The most frequent volunteer opportunity on our calendar — four weekday mornings, a Thursday kitchen session and a monthly Saturday. If you want a habit rather than a one-off, this is the one that can carry it.
