Dots show how strongly a place scores on what you picked, out of five. How we score

Before you go

Small print we found

  • Highway Inn adds a 5% “Mahalo Kitchen Charge”.
  • The Pig & The Lady adds 6% to the pre-tax check.
  • Merriman’s adds 4% to food.
  • Side Street Inn adds 3% on cards.
  • La Mer charges $125 a guest for late cancellations; ELEVEN $35 a guest for no-shows.

Nobody paid to be here

We don’t take money for listings or rankings. Our own studio, KraftStories, isn’t in this guide and isn’t counted in the events nearby.

How we score

Five ratings no review site gives you. They come from the restaurants’ own sites, menus and hours, plus our own events calendar.

Walk right inDays open, whether hours are published, whether you need to book, how late the kitchen runs, and whether it closes between lunch and dinner.
Truly localYears in Honolulu, local ownership, named island farms and fishers on the menu, island food traditions, and local awards since 2022.
Real priceTwo typical mains (or set menus), plus Oʻahu’s 4.712% tax, any charge printed on the menu, a 20% tip on table service, and two hours’ parking.
Near things to doEvents on our calendar within a 10-minute walk over the next two months, counted only when the kitchen is open around the start time. Updated hourly.
Better than its buzzIts Google rating and local awards against how much attention it gets (review volume and national press). High means underrated.

The neighbourhoods

What each area is good for, and the one thing that catches people out.

Chinatown

The densest block of creative things to do on the island: the First Friday art walk, the Downtown Art Center on Nuʻuanu, the galleries on Hotel and Bethel, and our own studio at 15 N Pauahi St. Everything below is a few minutes on foot from all of it.

Chinatown turns over fast. The Pig & The Lady left for Kaimukī in 2025, Little Village and Encore Saloon are gone, and most guides you will find online still list them. The markets shut in the afternoon, so they are a daytime stop, never a First Friday dinner.

See Chinatown only →

Downtown

Capitol Modern, ʻIolani Palace, the Judiciary History Center and Hawaiian Mission Houses are all within a few blocks of each other here.

This is the single most useful warning in the guide. Downtown restaurants are built for the weekday office lunch crowd, and Capitol Modern is only open Wednesday to Saturday. Café Julia — the obvious choice, one block from the museum — is closed at weekends. Turn up on a Saturday without a plan and you will find a business district with the shutters down.

See Downtown only →

Kakaʻako

Fishcake on Kamani St, the ceramics and printmaking studios around it, SALT at Our Kakaʻako, the Children’s Discovery Center and the Ward Village events all sit in this one flat, walkable pocket.

SALT and Ward Village are about 0.7 miles apart — a 13 to 15 minute walk, not the same place. Pick one before you get hungry.

See Kakaʻako only →

Waikīkī

The free cultural lessons at Royal Hawaiian Center, the Kūhiō Beach Hula Show, Sunset Stories at International Market Place and Kū Haʻaheo at Waikiki Beach Walk all happen inside a few blocks — as does the free U.S. Army Museum.

The hula shows finish around 7:30pm, which is exactly when Waikīkī kitchens start filling up. Book, or pick one of the late options below.

See Waikīkī only →

Makiki & Ala Moana

The Honolulu Museum of Art and the Blaisdell are here, a short walk apart.

HoMA is closed Monday and Tuesday, so the café is too. Everything else on this list is open when the museum is not.

Kaimukī & Kapahulu

Plantoem on Waialae Ave runs a free jazz and poetry night on the third Thursday of every month, and it happens to sit on the best restaurant street in Honolulu.

Check the day. Koko Head Cafe does not serve dinner on Thursdays, which is exactly the night you would want it.

About Hawaiʻi food awards

There is no Michelin Guide hereThere is no Michelin Guide for Hawaiʻi. No restaurant in the state holds a star or a Bib Gourmand, because the guide has never covered Hawaiʻi — so treat any restaurant advertising itself as “Michelin” here with care. Some chefs trained at starred restaurants on the mainland or in Europe, which is a personal credential, not a rating for the room you are sitting in.
James Beard, 2026No Hawaiʻi restaurant or chef won a James Beard Award in the 2026 cycle. One Hawaiʻi finalist was named — Neale Asato of Asato Family Shop, for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker. Oʻahu semifinalists included Ed Kenney of Mud Hen Water, Andrew Le of The Pig & The Lady, Yuya Yamanaka of Paris Hawaii and restaurateur Peter Merriman.
Hale ʻAina, 2026The 2026 Hale ʻAina Awards, voted by Honolulu Magazine readers, named Giovedì in Chinatown Best Oʻahu Restaurant, Chao Hawaiʻi Best New Restaurant and Best Vietnamese, and gave Arden Waikīkī gold for both Best Service and Best Ambiance.

Ratings, hours and prices were checked on Oct 19, 2026 against each restaurant’s own site first, then OpenTable, local press and Google Maps. Restaurant hours change more than anything else in our guides, so call if the meal matters. Something wrong? Every place has a “Something changed?” link. See how we verify.
