Making the Line
About
Making the Line is a feature documentary by Zilla Barbosa about competitive hula, shown at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival (HIFF46) neighbor island encore. This screening is not on Oʻahu. It plays at The Palace Theater, 38 Haili Street, Hilo, on Hawaiʻi Island. Filmed over three years, the 98-minute documentary follows Kumu Keano and Kumu Lono, partners in life and master hula teachers, and the diverse group of dancers they lead. It explores how athleticism and artistry meet in a living Hawaiian tradition, and what the pressure to excel does to their lives on and off the line. The film is in English and Hawaiian; HIFF does not print subtitle details or a rating. It is a world premiere and suits teens, adults and anyone interested in Hawaiian culture. The showing is on November 14 at 8:00 PM. HIFF says tickets for most neighbor island screenings are sold through the venue's own site, hilopalace.com, and no price is printed on HIFF's page. The same day at The Palace Theater, the calendar lists Keiki Shorts at 1:15 PM, Made In Hawaii Shorts 1 at 3:15 PM and Purehearted at 5:30 PM. Making the Line also plays at Kahilu Theater on November 8 and at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on November 15.
