The Navigator

About

The Navigator is the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival's opening night documentary, directed by Jordan Manley, and this screening brings it to Lānaʻi as part of the festival's neighbor island encore. It is not on Oʻahu. It plays at Lānaʻi Theater at Hale Keaka, 465 7th Street, Lānaʻi City, on November 10. The film follows Nainoa Thompson, who in 1980 became the first Native Hawaiian in about six centuries to sail a voyaging canoe from Hawaiʻi to Tahiti without a compass or modern instruments. Nearly fifty years later he leads one more crossing of about 2,400 miles with student navigators, relying on stars, swells and the teachings of master navigator Mau Piailug. The documentary runs 95 minutes, in English and Hawaiian, and has no printed rating. It suits families with older children and anyone interested in Hawaiian culture. The showtime is 5:00 PM. HIFF's neighbor island page says Lānaʻi tickets are handled through HIFF's box office site, boxoffice.hiff.org, and no ticket price is printed. Lānaʻi has just this one festival day, November 10. Elsewhere, the calendar lists Navigator screenings at Kahilu Theater in Waimea on November 7, in Kaunakakai on Molokaʻi on November 8, and at The Palace Theater in Hilo on November 12.
