Purehearted

About

Purehearted (Japanese title Kaze no Majimu) is a Japanese drama directed by Kaoru Haga, shown as part of HIFF46's Spotlight on Japan and Okinawa. Sairi Ito plays Majimu, a shy temp worker in Okinawa who enters a company contest with an unlikely idea: making rum from local sugarcane. She has never distilled anything, yet she faces doubtful bosses, family worries, red tape and local politics, and her stubborn curiosity slowly wins people over. The story is based on true events. HIFF lists the film at 105 minutes, in Japanese. Its lineup says English subtitles; the film page itself does not mention them. No rating is printed. It is billed as a Hawaiʻi premiere and suits adults and teens who enjoy gentle, character-driven drama. This screening is on November 3 at 7:00 PM at Consolidated Theatres Kapolei, 890 Kamokila Boulevard, Kapolei, on the Ewa side of Oʻahu. HIFF prints no per-ticket price on the film page, so check boxoffice.hiff.org for current prices. Members get 20 percent off up to two tickets per showtime. On the same evening, The Navigator plays at the same theatre at 8:00 PM, and Niu Forever follows there on November 4 at 6:00 PM. Purehearted also screens in Hilo on November 14.
