You Are the Film + Gamaland
About
You Are the Film + Gamaland is a Japanese double bill at the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival (HIFF46) that pairs a romantic fantasy with a found-footage chiller. You Are the Film, directed by Makoto Ueda in his feature debut, runs 68 minutes and follows a playwright and a musician who wander into a neighborhood microcinema and discover the people on screen can watch the audience back. HIFF compares its playful meta-fiction to a Japanese take on The Purple Rose of Cairo. Gamaland, directed by Hiroki Nishii and running 60 minutes, is a mockumentary built from supposed 1990s TV footage about a VHS fan who visits an abandoned amusement park. Both films are in Japanese; subtitle details and ratings are not printed. The mix of comedy and horror suits adults and older teens. This showing is on October 24 at 8:30 PM at Consolidated Theatres Kahala, 4211 Waialae Avenue, Honolulu. The film page prints no price. HIFF's how-to page lists regular advance tickets at Kahala at $17, $15 for seniors, students and military with ID, and $14 for members, with rush tickets at $20. HIFF's venue record notes that most screenings sit on a Kalanianaʻole or Waiʻalae bus route. Earlier that day, Naza plays at 12:30 PM and The Table: Day and Night at 4:30 PM. The same double bill also screens on October 23 at 8:45 PM.
