Alcatraz Historic Gardens Volunteer Shift
About
Volunteers board an early boat to Alcatraz Island and spend the morning weeding, pruning, composting, planting and collecting seed in the gardens once kept by the island's soldiers and prison families. Shifts run Wednesdays and Thursdays 8 am–noon, free, ages 15 and up, with registration closing the Sunday before and photo ID needed to board; the boat leaves from Alcatraz Landing at Pier 33 on the Embarcadero (Muni F-line). It is the only way to be on the island before the day-tripper crowds, but note Alcatraz is closed for dock repairs Oct 26–Nov 18, so no shifts run in that stretch.
