Clay Night
About
A Friday-evening first try at the potter's wheel for adults 18+: after a demo on how the wheel works and how to center clay, participants throw on their own, then pick one piece that staff will glaze and fire for pickup in about four to six weeks. It takes place Friday, November 20, 6–9 pm at Pottery Northwest, 2254 7th Ave in South Lake Union, roughly 10 minutes on foot from Westlake Station (1 Line). Tickets are $95, clay and tools included. A daytime Clay Day with the same format runs on November 14.

How it compares
- After work
At $95, this sits about the middle of the 55 single-session pottery classes we list in Seattle. They run from $25 to $650, and the typical price is $98.
That works out to about $32 an hour for a 3-hour session.
If one session leaves you wanting more, 6 studios we list run multi-week pottery courses, from $140.
It starts after work, which only 40% of the pottery classes on our calendar do.

New to pottery?
Most first classes are either a wheel taster, where you learn to centre clay and pull up a cylinder, or hand-building, where you shape a mug, dish or planter with pinch, coil and slab techniques.
- Wear clothes that can get muddy and keep nails short; rings and bracelets come off before the wheel.
- Expect two to three hours for a single session. Clay, tools and firing are almost always in the price; glazing sometimes costs extra.
- A one-time class is the cheap way to find out whether you want a five- or six-week course, which is where the wheel actually starts to click.
Taking it home: Not on the day. Pieces dry, are fired, glazed and fired again, so studios usually hold them for two to four weeks.
