Nerikomi 101

About

An evening introduction to nerikomi, the Japanese technique of stacking and slicing different colored clays into patterns: students combine three studio clays and press them into wooden molds to make a few small plates or one larger one, which the studio then fires and glazes. Wednesday, November 18, 6–8:30 pm at Ballard Clay, 2834 NW Market St, served by King County Metro route 44. $95 per person with materials and instruction included. A repeat session is set for December 2.

How it compares

  • Beginner-friendly
  • After work

At $95, this sits about the middle of the 54 single-session pottery classes we list in Seattle. They run from $25 to $650, and the typical price is $100.

That works out to about $38 an hour for a 2.5-hour session.

If one session leaves you wanting more, 6 studios we list run multi-week pottery courses, from $140.

It starts after work, which only 39% of the pottery classes on our calendar do.

New to pottery?

Most first classes are either a wheel taster, where you learn to centre clay and pull up a cylinder, or hand-building, where you shape a mug, dish or planter with pinch, coil and slab techniques.

  • Wear clothes that can get muddy and keep nails short; rings and bracelets come off before the wheel.
  • Expect two to three hours for a single session. Clay, tools and firing are almost always in the price; glazing sometimes costs extra.
  • A one-time class is the cheap way to find out whether you want a five- or six-week course, which is where the wheel actually starts to click.

Taking it home: Not on the day. Pieces dry, are fired, glazed and fired again, so studios usually hold them for two to four weeks.
