Clay Day
About
A beginner wheel-throwing session for adults 18 and over: an instructor demonstrates centering and pulling up a form, then everyone gets their own time at the wheel, and each student chooses one piece for the studio to glaze and fire (ready for pickup roughly four to six weeks later). It runs Saturday, November 14, 1–4 pm at Pottery Northwest's studio at 2254 7th Ave in South Lake Union, about a 10-minute walk from Westlake Station (1 Line). The fee is $95 with clay and tools included. The studio has an evening version of the same intro on November 20 and a Holiday Wheel Night on December 11.

How it compares
- Weekend
At $95, this sits about the middle of the 55 single-session pottery classes we list in Seattle. They run from $25 to $650, and the typical price is $98.
That works out to about $32 an hour for a 3-hour session.
If one session leaves you wanting more, 6 studios we list run multi-week pottery courses, from $140.

New to pottery?
Most first classes are either a wheel taster, where you learn to centre clay and pull up a cylinder, or hand-building, where you shape a mug, dish or planter with pinch, coil and slab techniques.
- Wear clothes that can get muddy and keep nails short; rings and bracelets come off before the wheel.
- Expect two to three hours for a single session. Clay, tools and firing are almost always in the price; glazing sometimes costs extra.
- A one-time class is the cheap way to find out whether you want a five- or six-week course, which is where the wheel actually starts to click.
Taking it home: Not on the day. Pieces dry, are fired, glazed and fired again, so studios usually hold them for two to four weeks.
