Locals' Summer
About
A show of paintings by Michaela Jean Upp about San Diego's "fifth season", the warm, emptier weeks of early fall on the coast, painted in the style she calls whimsical romanticism. It is open 10am to 4pm daily from Friday 23 October to Monday 2 November in the Command Center Gallery, Building 200, Dick Laub NTC Command Center, 2640 Historic Decatur Rd, Liberty Station (MTS Route 28). Admission is free. Upp's own studio is upstairs in Barracks 15 at Liberty Station.

How it compares
It is free. Most painting classes in San Diego are not: the paid ones we list start at $15.
Not ready to commit to a course? 5 studios offer one-time painting classes from $15, a cheaper way to find out if you like it.

New to painting?
Painting and drawing classes run from relaxed one-night sessions that guide you to a finished canvas to multi-week courses in watercolour, oils, figure drawing or illustration.
- Guided one-night classes suit groups and first-timers; courses suit people who want to improve.
- Figure-drawing sessions use a live model and are usually for adults only.
- Materials are usually included in one-off classes; courses often send a supply list.
Taking it home: The same day, though acrylic and oil may need a few hours to dry before they travel well.
