You draw a design on cloth stretched over a wooden frame, then fill it in with a handheld tufting gun that punches yarn through the cloth, loop by loop, until you have a soft, fluffy rug, mirror or wall piece.
It looks harder than it is. The gun takes a few minutes to get used to, staff load the yarn and help keep your lines clean, and most studios have designs to trace if you don’t want to draw.

How it’s made
You do the fun part in class. The finishing is often done by the studio afterwards.
Where the time goes · about 3 h
110 minFrom a mini or coaster to a large rug; the size sets the price and the time. Then pick colours from the yarn wall.
220–30 minTrace a template or draw your own straight onto the cloth on the frame.
31–2 hFill the design with the tufting gun, one colour at a time.
4In class or afterThe back is glued and covered, then the pile is sheared and carved. Many studios do this for you.

Who it’s for

Questions
We list 9 places from 8 operators across New Jersey, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan. Use “Find a class near me” to sort them by distance, or the Area filter.
The typical starting price here is $155 per person, from $129. Bigger rugs cost more: most studios price by rug size, and a large rug can cost two or three times a small one.
Plan on two to four hours for a small rug and most of a day for a big one. Most Manhattan and Long Island City studios are a short walk from the subway.
Often not. The back has to be glued and covered and the pile trimmed; many studios do that for you and hand the rug over a few days to a week later. Check each listing’s notes.
6 of the 9 run private sessions for birthdays, dates and teams, and 1 is BYOB. Check each studio’s drinks rule before you bring a bottle.
4 places here take kids or teens with an adult. The guns are loud and powerful, so most studios set the age at 10 to 16.
