Living! Julian Beck, Painter

About

The first show at Ripense, the Accademia di San Luca's new exhibition space, reveals the little-known painting of Living Theatre co-founder Julian Beck: about 40 paintings and drawings from 1944–1958, including his Abstract Expressionist period, with photographs, posters, costumes, video excerpts and his 1982 backdrop for The Yellow Methuselah. Via Ripense 6, until 14 November 2026, Tuesday–Saturday 3:30–8 PM. Free.

New to painting?

Painting and drawing classes run from relaxed one-night sessions that guide you to a finished canvas to multi-week courses in watercolour, oils, figure drawing or illustration.

  • Guided one-night classes suit groups and first-timers; courses suit people who want to improve.
  • Figure-drawing sessions use a live model and are usually for adults only.
  • Materials are usually included in one-off classes; courses often send a supply list.

Taking it home: The same day, though acrylic and oil may need a few hours to dry before they travel well.
