Basket Weaving with Pine Needles & Raffia
About
Fiber artist Abeni Pierson of Where the Pines Grow teaches coiled pine-needle basketry: preparing the needles, then building a basket base, walls and closure with raffia, trying sinew and waxed thread along the way. Part one (spiral stitch) is Tuesday 3 November and part two (figure-8 stitch and finishing) is Thursday 5 November, both 5:30pm to 8:30pm, at The Sticks, 350 N Ogden Ave, Suite 300 (Ashland on the Green/Pink Line). $80.

How it compares
- After work
- Take it home the same day
At $80, this sits about the middle of the 11 single-session textiles classes we list in Chicago. They run from $5 to $190, and the typical price is $70.
That works out to about $27 an hour for a 3-hour session.
If one session leaves you wanting more, 1 studio we list runs multi-week textiles courses.
It starts after work, which only 33% of the textiles classes on our calendar do.

New to textiles?
Textile classes range from weaving on a frame or rigid-heddle loom to embroidery, knitting, crochet, natural dyeing, felting and sewing a first garment.
- Check whether the class is for complete beginners or assumes you can already cast on or thread a machine.
- Single sessions usually make something small: a wall hanging, a hoop, a dyed scarf.
- Bring reading glasses if you use them; most fibre work is close-up.
Taking it home: Usually the same day. Larger pieces may be finished at home with the yarn or thread you leave with.
