Whisk Broom Weaving with Abeni Pierson

About

A hands-on broom-making session that starts with the craft's history, from growing broomcorn to the role brooms have played in work, ritual and protection. Abeni Pierson then teaches traditional weaving as participants make Appalachian-style turkey-wing and hawk-tail mini brooms from pine needles, followed by a broomcorn whisk broom to take home. It starts at noon Sunday at the DuSable, 740 E 56th Pl; tickets are $55.20. Pierson is back Nov 8 for a gourd ornament workshop.

New to textiles?

Textile classes range from weaving on a frame or rigid-heddle loom to embroidery, knitting, crochet, natural dyeing, felting and sewing a first garment.

  • Check whether the class is for complete beginners or assumes you can already cast on or thread a machine.
  • Single sessions usually make something small: a wall hanging, a hoop, a dyed scarf.
  • Bring reading glasses if you use them; most fibre work is close-up.

Taking it home: Usually the same day. Larger pieces may be finished at home with the yarn or thread you leave with.
