Intermediate Glazing
About
Glaze chemistry in practice: over three Monday evenings students run line blends and tri-axial blends on a chosen base glaze to shift its color and surface, and learn to diagnose and fix common glaze faults by adjusting recipes. Joe teaches on November 9, 16 and 23, 6–9pm, at Seattle Artist League, 5516 4th Ave S in Georgetown, for $195 including a $25 materials fee. The studio recommends taking Introduction to Glazing first and arriving with prepared test tiles.

How it compares
- After work
At $195, this sits toward the top of the 55 single-session pottery classes we list in Seattle. They run from $25 to $650, and the typical price is $95.
That works out to about $65 an hour for a 3-hour session.
If one session leaves you wanting more, 6 studios we list run multi-week pottery courses, from $140.
It starts after work, which only 40% of the pottery classes on our calendar do.

New to pottery?
Most first classes are either a wheel taster, where you learn to centre clay and pull up a cylinder, or hand-building, where you shape a mug, dish or planter with pinch, coil and slab techniques.
- Wear clothes that can get muddy and keep nails short; rings and bracelets come off before the wheel.
- Expect two to three hours for a single session. Clay, tools and firing are almost always in the price; glazing sometimes costs extra.
- A one-time class is the cheap way to find out whether you want a five- or six-week course, which is where the wheel actually starts to click.
Taking it home: Not on the day. Pieces dry, are fired, glazed and fired again, so studios usually hold them for two to four weeks.
