Fran O'neill: Abstracts Three-day Intensive

About

An in-person drawing intensive in which Fran O'Neill has students take a historical image apart and rebuild it through abstraction: many small studies testing composition, mark-making, distortion and collage, with the strongest pushed to a larger scale and a closing group critique. It runs Saturday to Monday, November 7–9, 10am–5pm, at Seattle Artist League, 5516 4th Ave S in Georgetown, for $595 (payment plans available). Some drawing experience helps but all are welcome, and O'Neill's four-day Giant Figures intensive follows on November 10–13.

How it compares

  • Weekend
  • Take it home the same day

At $595, this sits toward the top of the 31 single-session painting classes we list in Seattle. They run from $25 to $695, and the typical price is $45.

That works out to about $85 an hour for a 7-hour session.

If one session leaves you wanting more, 3 studios we list run multi-week painting courses, from $10.

It is on a weekend, which only 29% of the painting classes on our calendar are.

New to painting?

Painting and drawing classes run from relaxed one-night sessions that guide you to a finished canvas to multi-week courses in watercolour, oils, figure drawing or illustration.

  • Guided one-night classes suit groups and first-timers; courses suit people who want to improve.
  • Figure-drawing sessions use a live model and are usually for adults only.
  • Materials are usually included in one-off classes; courses often send a supply list.

Taking it home: The same day, though acrylic and oil may need a few hours to dry before they travel well.
