Pinch Pots: Mugs

About

A 90-minute handbuilding class where each student pinches, shapes and decorates two mugs, adding handles and other details, with no wheel involved; the studio glazes and fires them for pickup two to three weeks later. It is on Saturday, October 31 at 1 pm. Rain Ceramic has studios on Capitol Hill (1423 10th Ave, about five minutes from Capitol Hill Station on the 1 Line) and in Phinney Ridge, and the listing does not say which one hosts this session. Tickets are $75 per student.

How it compares

  • Weekend

At $75, this sits toward the low end of the 55 single-session pottery classes we list in Seattle. They run from $25 to $650, and the typical price is $98.

That works out to about $50 an hour for a 1.5-hour session.

If one session leaves you wanting more, 6 studios we list run multi-week pottery courses, from $140.

New to pottery?

Most first classes are either a wheel taster, where you learn to centre clay and pull up a cylinder, or hand-building, where you shape a mug, dish or planter with pinch, coil and slab techniques.

  • Wear clothes that can get muddy and keep nails short; rings and bracelets come off before the wheel.
  • Expect two to three hours for a single session. Clay, tools and firing are almost always in the price; glazing sometimes costs extra.
  • A one-time class is the cheap way to find out whether you want a five- or six-week course, which is where the wheel actually starts to click.

Taking it home: Not on the day. Pieces dry, are fired, glazed and fired again, so studios usually hold them for two to four weeks.
