After School Wheel

About

A four-week after-school pottery program for ages 10 and up, where kids learn to center clay on the wheel, shape pots and make pieces that are glazed and fired for them to take home; an optional meal is available for an extra fee. It meets Wednesdays 3:30–5:30pm on 4, 11, 18 and 25 November at Wet Clay Cafe, 1109 N 35th St, Suite A in Fremont (Metro routes 31, 32 and 62). The program is $300 for all four weeks, and advance registration is required.

How it compares

  • Kids & families

At $300, this sits toward the top of the 55 single-session pottery classes we list in Seattle. They run from $25 to $650, and the typical price is $95.

That works out to about $150 an hour for a 2-hour session.

If one session leaves you wanting more, 6 studios we list run multi-week pottery courses, from $140.

New to pottery?

Most first classes are either a wheel taster, where you learn to centre clay and pull up a cylinder, or hand-building, where you shape a mug, dish or planter with pinch, coil and slab techniques.

  • Wear clothes that can get muddy and keep nails short; rings and bracelets come off before the wheel.
  • Expect two to three hours for a single session. Clay, tools and firing are almost always in the price; glazing sometimes costs extra.
  • A one-time class is the cheap way to find out whether you want a five- or six-week course, which is where the wheel actually starts to click.

Taking it home: Not on the day. Pieces dry, are fired, glazed and fired again, so studios usually hold them for two to four weeks.
