Art History Lecture Series: to Light a Single Candle

About

Art historian Rebecca Albiani looks at the candle in Baroque painting, both as a reminder of life's brevity in still lifes and as a dramatic light source carrying richer symbolism in figure paintings by Georges de La Tour, Rembrandt and Mihály Munkácsy. Thursday, December 10, 11:30 am–12:30 pm at the Frye Art Museum, 704 Terry Ave (First Hill Streetcar at Broadway & Terrace, or Metro 3/4 on James St). Single tickets $20, members $15, students $10, sold on the day in person by card only. The same series featured Jeffrey Gibson on November 12.

New to painting?

Painting and drawing classes run from relaxed one-night sessions that guide you to a finished canvas to multi-week courses in watercolour, oils, figure drawing or illustration.

  • Guided one-night classes suit groups and first-timers; courses suit people who want to improve.
  • Figure-drawing sessions use a live model and are usually for adults only.
  • Materials are usually included in one-off classes; courses often send a supply list.

Taking it home: The same day, though acrylic and oil may need a few hours to dry before they travel well.
