Kintsugi: Embracing Imperfection
About
A one-morning kintsugi class on the history and idea behind Japanese golden repair, mending two ceramic pieces with gold mica powder and gold leaf (the results are not food-safe). It runs Saturday 28 November, 9:30am to noon, at the San Diego Craft Collective, 2590 Truxtun Rd, Studio 106, Liberty Station (MTS Route 28 runs along Rosecrans St by Liberty Station), for ages 17+. It costs $95, with materials, a supply list and three mica colours included. A five-week kintsugi series also runs at the studio on Monday evenings through 23 November.

How it compares

At $95, this sits about the middle of the 9 single-session pottery classes we list in San Diego. They run from $25 to $100, and the typical price is $73.
That works out to about $38 an hour for a 2.5-hour session.
If one session leaves you wanting more, 2 studios we list run multi-week pottery courses, from $275.

New to pottery?
Most first classes are either a wheel taster, where you learn to centre clay and pull up a cylinder, or hand-building, where you shape a mug, dish or planter with pinch, coil and slab techniques.
- Wear clothes that can get muddy and keep nails short; rings and bracelets come off before the wheel.
- Expect two to three hours for a single session. Clay, tools and firing are almost always in the price; glazing sometimes costs extra.
- A one-time class is the cheap way to find out whether you want a five- or six-week course, which is where the wheel actually starts to click.
Taking it home: Not on the day. Pieces dry, are fired, glazed and fired again, so studios usually hold them for two to four weeks.
