Annual Holiday Votive Workshop
About
Students press textures into small clay slabs and layer them so candlelight glows through, making a one-of-a-kind votive; the studio glazes the pieces, ready for pickup within three weeks. It is a one-evening workshop on Thursday, November 12 from 6:30 to 8pm at the Oceanside Pottery Club, 1401 S El Camino Real, #1103, Oceanside, for $68. No experience is required, and under-14s must come with a participating adult.

How it compares
- Beginner-friendly
- After work
At $68, this sits about the middle of the 9 single-session pottery classes we list in San Diego. They run from $25 to $100, and the typical price is $87.
That works out to about $45 an hour for a 1.5-hour session.
If one session leaves you wanting more, 2 studios we list run multi-week pottery courses, from $275.
It starts after work, which only 23% of the pottery classes on our calendar do.

New to pottery?
Most first classes are either a wheel taster, where you learn to centre clay and pull up a cylinder, or hand-building, where you shape a mug, dish or planter with pinch, coil and slab techniques.
- Wear clothes that can get muddy and keep nails short; rings and bracelets come off before the wheel.
- Expect two to three hours for a single session. Clay, tools and firing are almost always in the price; glazing sometimes costs extra.
- A one-time class is the cheap way to find out whether you want a five- or six-week course, which is where the wheel actually starts to click.
Taking it home: Not on the day. Pieces dry, are fired, glazed and fired again, so studios usually hold them for two to four weeks.
