Intro to Stained Glass
About
A first stained-glass project from a choice of patterns and glass colours, learning to cut and grind glass, wrap it in copper foil and solder the pieces together. It runs Saturday 7 November, 9:30am to 1pm, at the San Diego Craft Collective, 2590 Truxtun Rd, Studio 106, Liberty Station (MTS Route 28 runs along Rosecrans St by Liberty Station), for ages 14+. The class is $115, with glass and tools included and a $15 material fee to the instructor. The collective's fused-glass ornament class follows on 8 November.

How it compares

At $115, this sits about the middle of the 6 single-session glass classes we list in San Diego. They run from $60 to $300, and the typical price is $100.
That works out to about $33 an hour for a 3.5-hour session.

New to glass?
Glass classes split into fused glass (cutting and layering sheet glass that is melted in a kiln), stained glass (cut pieces joined with copper foil and solder) and hot glass (blowing or flameworking at a furnace or torch).
- Closed-toe shoes and natural-fibre clothing for hot-glass sessions; studios provide eye protection.
- Fused and stained glass suit a first visit. Glassblowing tasters are short and guided closely.
- Hot-glass classes are small and sell out first, especially before holidays.
Taking it home: Rarely on the day. Fused pieces go back in the kiln and blown glass cools overnight, so expect to collect it later or have it shipped.
