Holiday Mugs
About
Over two evenings, students hand-build a soft-slab mug with a holiday theme and learn how to construct and personalize it; no clay experience is needed and the class is open to ages 10 and up. Sessions are Thursday, November 5 and Thursday, November 19, 6 to 8pm, at the Oceanside Pottery Club, 1401 S El Camino Real, #1103, Oceanside. The $78 fee covers all materials, and guests 21 and over may bring their own drinks. The studio's Annual Holiday Votive Workshop on November 12 is also on our calendar.

How it compares
- After work
At $78, this sits about the middle of the 9 single-session pottery classes we list in San Diego. They run from $25 to $100, and the typical price is $82.
That works out to about $39 an hour for a 2-hour session.
If one session leaves you wanting more, 2 studios we list run multi-week pottery courses, from $275.
It starts after work, which only 23% of the pottery classes on our calendar do.

New to pottery?
Most first classes are either a wheel taster, where you learn to centre clay and pull up a cylinder, or hand-building, where you shape a mug, dish or planter with pinch, coil and slab techniques.
- Wear clothes that can get muddy and keep nails short; rings and bracelets come off before the wheel.
- Expect two to three hours for a single session. Clay, tools and firing are almost always in the price; glazing sometimes costs extra.
- A one-time class is the cheap way to find out whether you want a five- or six-week course, which is where the wheel actually starts to click.
Taking it home: Not on the day. Pieces dry, are fired, glazed and fired again, so studios usually hold them for two to four weeks.
