Two Buses Set Out: Japanese American Photography, History, and Memory
About
A day-long symposium from JANM and UCLA's Yanai Initiative takes a fresh look at a well-known sepia photograph of two buses outside the Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple, long read as a picture of the 1942 removal of Japanese Americans from Little Tokyo. Three panels of historians, curators and photographers, including speakers from the Getty and Cal State Fullerton, weigh the newer research and how photographs shape memory. It runs 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Saturday, Nov 7 in the Democracy Center at 100 N Central Ave, near the Metro A/E Line Little Tokyo/Arts District station; tickets are $10, $5 for seniors, and free for JANM members and college students with ID. On Nov 12 the same space hosts a staged reading of Korematsu v. The United States.
