Holiday Makers Market
About
A one-day curated holiday market with around 20 Bay Area makers selling things like jewelry, ceramics, accessories, art prints, aromatherapy goods and watercolor kits; the vendor list is to be posted nearer the date. It runs 10 am–5 pm on Sunday, Dec 6 in Helen and Charles Schwab Hall, Floor 2 of SFMOMA, 151 Third St, a short walk from Montgomery St BART/Muni. Free and open to the public, with no museum admission required (the Museum Store member discount does not apply). A free parol-making workshop runs at the museum the same afternoon.

How it compares
- Weekend
It is free. Most pottery classes in the Bay Area are not: the paid ones we list start at $10.
If one session leaves you wanting more, 7 studios we list run multi-week pottery courses, from $65.
It is on a weekend, which only 37% of the pottery classes on our calendar are.

New to pottery?
Most first classes are either a wheel taster, where you learn to centre clay and pull up a cylinder, or hand-building, where you shape a mug, dish or planter with pinch, coil and slab techniques.
- Wear clothes that can get muddy and keep nails short; rings and bracelets come off before the wheel.
- Expect two to three hours for a single session. Clay, tools and firing are almost always in the price; glazing sometimes costs extra.
- A one-time class is the cheap way to find out whether you want a five- or six-week course, which is where the wheel actually starts to click.
Taking it home: Not on the day. Pieces dry, are fired, glazed and fired again, so studios usually hold them for two to four weeks.
